1. On page 61, Manne says that men’s displayed hostility towards women “is compatible with their being egalitarians in the abstract”. Do you think that a man can truly believe in the abstract idea of equality while also exhibiting misogynistic behaviors?
2. On page 66, Manne suggests “that the term ‘misogynist’ is best treated as a threshold concept, and also a comparative one, functioning as a kind of ‘warning label’, which should be sparingly applied to people whose attitudes and actions are particularly and consistently misogynistic across myriad social contexts”. It seems to me that I know several people who I would identify as misogynists. Do you think that it is wrong or inappropriate to label people as misogynists?
3. On page 76, Manne says that “there is no reason to think that misogyny will be transmitted culturally by being taught directly”. To me, it seems that she is suggesting that people unconsciously learn misogynistic behaviors or reactions through the normal socialization which occurs in a patriarchal society. Do you think this is true?
